Alley Oop Fantasy Land, Iraan, 2000

Iraan, Texas (named for "Ira" and "Ann") is the home of Marathon Oil Company. A major oil field was discovered there in the 1920's, on land owned by Ira and Ann Yates. The original discovery well is still producing. Iraan is also the birthplace of the creator of the comic-strip character "Alley Oop." "Alley Oop Fantasy Land" is a park in Iraan dedicated to this man. The above creation is a likeness of Alley Oop, crafted in welded steel at a height of approximately 15 feet. Also in the park is a wonderful geological and historical museum of Iraan and the surrounding countryside. If you happen to be in the Big Bend area of Texas, go out of your way to see "Alley Oop Fantasy Land" and the museum.
